How to read Grafton's annual water report for hardness

Each year the Village of Grafton publishes a drinking water quality report for its system. Most of it covers other measurements, but one short line is about hardness, and that line is all a softener quote needs from the report.

Where to find it

The Village posts the report on its website, where the 2025 edition appears as its Consumer Confidence Report. The Village's Water Treatment page is the other place it talks about hardness, in plainer language.

If your house is on the Village's system, the report is about your water. If it runs on a private well, the report describes a supply your house does not use, and a lab report on your own well takes its place.

One measurement, two units

The 2025 report gives hardness both ways: approximately 22 grains, and 377 parts per million on average. Those describe the same water in different units.

Grains per gallon is what a softener's setting is entered in. Parts per million, which for water equals milligrams per liter, is what labs and the USGS scale use. Dividing the ppm figure by 17.1 converts it: 377 divided by 17.1 is just over 22.

What an average leaves out

The report's figure is a yearly average. An average does not show a single day, and it does not say which of the six wells fed your tap at any given moment. In Grafton the six wells share one aquifer, so the average is a fair summary of village water, but it is still an average.

The reading the plumber takes at your tap on installation day is the measurement for your house on that day. The report starts the conversation, and the tap reading confirms it.

The other lines in the report

A water quality report lists plenty besides hardness. A softener quote does not need those lines, and a softener is not designed to treat things such as bacteria or nitrate, so read them for what they say about the supply rather than for anything a softener would change.

What to have in hand for the call

Read the hardness line as printed, with its units and its year: for 2025, approximately 22 grains, 377 ppm. Add how many people live in the house, where the main line comes in and whether there is an old softener to replace.

That is enough for a price. If a newer report has come out by the time you call, its figure is the one the quote uses.

Common questions

My report says ppm. Is that the same as mg/L?

For water, yes. Divide either one by 17.1 to get grains per gallon, which is how 377 becomes about 22.

Do I need the whole report for the call?

No. The hardness line and the report's year are all the call takes from it.

I'm on a private well near Grafton. Which report should I read?

Your own well's lab report. The Village's report covers the village system only, so the hardness line on your report, and its date, are the numbers to have ready.
